I've been thinking a lot about Matthew Ross Alexander after reading about the FedEx shooting. What's been on my mind recently is the kind of person he seemed to be—especially at work. Working anywhere for ten years says a lot about someone's dedication, but more than that, those who knew him say he had an incredible sense of humor and a golden heart. Can you imagine what his daily presence must have brought to his colleagues? I feel for those who shared their workdays with him; losing a friend and coworker like that must leave such an irreplaceable void. It's also just so frustrating how this tragedy could have been prevented. It makes me worry about the future—about the systems that are meant to protect us but seem to have loopholes big enough for such horrors to slip through. I hope Matthew's legacy somehow pushes forward solutions so we don’t have to keep telling stories like his with the same tragic endings. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and coworkers who have to navigate life without him.
