I came across Gary's case while scrolling through old missing persons reports, and something just doesn't sit right with me about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. I mean, I get that he was last seen crossing thin ice on his snow machine, which is risky enough, but what struck me was how isolated that part of Skilak Lake is. It's not exactly a place you'd expect to see a lot of people in early April. Did anyone ever look into why he was headed to Caribou Island in the first place? Was it a routine trip for him, or was there something specific he was doing out there? I know it's been decades, but maybe someone has some insight or remembers hearing something else about that area around the time he disappeared.

Did anyone else find it strange that no remnants of Gary's snow machine have ever been found? With ice conditions being so unpredictable, I would have thought rescuers might locate at least some evidence of it if it broke through. Alaska's really its own universe, and sometimes things seem to just disappear without a trace. It's such a dangerous environment, but still, the lack of any physical remnants just feels bizarre. Wondering if anyone local has insights on how thorough the search efforts were back in 1980 or if they've changed over the years?
