In thinking about Maurice Berger and the impact his senseless death has had, I can't help but feel for his classmates at Bryant Alternative High School. Losing someone so young and vibrant must have been a devastating blow to such a closely-knit school community. Maurice seemed deeply engaged in making his environment better, from his role on the AV/Tech team to his participation in the Multicultural Book Club. Those activities wouldn't have just been events on a calendar—they illustrate how he was a kid who really wanted to contribute and make connections.
It breaks my heart to think of those empty hallways and events now missing his presence. His friends and peers had to return to those places where they once laughed and collaborated with him; that couldn't have been easy. Knowing he was such a positive force, I can only imagine how his absence has been felt every single day since that tragic night.
Here's hoping that time will help heal his friends and classmates and that justice will finally be served. Does anyone else find it odd how quiet things got in the neighborhood after Maurice's death? I read that the Fairfax County Police did a thorough canvas, but I’m curious if there might be people—neighbors, passersby, anyone—who saw something that night and might be scared to come forward. It’s such a close-knit area, and Maurice seemed to have made a big impact on his school and friends. I can't imagine the pain his family is feeling, having to live with unanswered questions.
