I was reading about Jaleel S. Yates today, and it really got me thinking about how his mother, Jendaihi Coles, pushed for an honorary diploma from Huguenot High School for him. It’s so touching to see a mother fighting to preserve her son’s legacy and make sure people remember him not just as a victim but as someone who had a bright future ahead. This kind of tribute can mean a lot to a grieving family, giving them a bit of solace and a way to celebrate who Jaleel was, beyond just his tragic end. It must have been such a bittersweet moment for them, seeing how much their son was cherished by the community. I can't begin to imagine the strength it must take to advocate for someone you’ve lost, let alone under such devastating circumstances. Anyone else know how common honorary diplomas are in situations like this, or have any insights into how schools decide on granting them? It’s an aspect of memorializing a lost loved one that I hadn’t really thought about before now.
