It's been difficult watching the community cope with Derrick Parker’s death. It's heartbreaking to think about how this young man’s life was cut short by such a cruel act. I was particularly moved by the fact that Derrick's family and friends have stood strong throughout this entire process. When they showed up at every court appearance and organized demonstrations, it was not only a call for justice for Derrick but a plea to prevent such senseless violence from continuing in Portsmouth. I can’t stop thinking about how these types of tragedies keep happening in our communities, and it's clear that something needs to change. Derrick’s story is a painful reminder that we need to tackle the issue of gun violence more seriously. No family should have to endure such loss and grief. The support that poured in from the community says a lot about who Derrick was and the kind of impact he had on people’s lives. It's evident that he was deeply loved and will be missed dearly. I hope his family finds some peace and that his story leads to meaningful discussions and actions regarding community safety. It’s clear that we need to do better for people like Derrick.
