I’ve been following the tragic events surrounding the sailors from the USS George H.W. Bush, and my heart goes out to the families affected by these losses. I couldn't stop thinking about how isolated these young individuals might have felt. From what I've read and heard from friends in the military, the life aboard a ship, especially during maintenance periods, can be incredibly demanding and stressful.
The gap between the structured environment and the need for personal downtime is big. A friend’s sibling served on a carrier, and she often mentioned how the long hours and lack of communication opportunities with family could be overwhelming. It’s like they live in a world so different from ours, with pressure constantly on their shoulders.
Does anyone know what else is being put in place aside from counseling for the crew? I hope the Navy looks into what can be done for sailors while they are on the ship to make sure they never feel there's no way out, support-wise.
It’s crucial that changes happen, and that these discussions remain at the forefront. We need to honor these young men by pushing for a culture where seeking help is encouraged and the well-being of sailors is prioritized.
