It's truly upsetting to think about how domestic violence can escalate to this level. Charkela, or "Cha Cha" as her loved ones called her, seemed to have so much life and love to give. I came across an article mentioning how she was deeply involved in her community, always the kind of person willing to lend a hand or a kind word. It's devastating how quickly things can turn tragic when a relationship becomes volatile. It's also concerning to learn that Jamar Lafonz Hilliard had a firearm despite being a convicted felon. This raises so many questions about how we can better enforce laws that are meant to prevent such situations. I can't help but think about how many others are in similar dangerous circumstances and what more we could be doing to support them before it’s too late. My heart goes out to Charkela's family and friends during this difficult time. I hope they're finding some comfort in the memories they cherish with her and in the justice system's acknowledgment of the crime, even if the sentence feels too short for such a significant loss.
