I've been thinking a lot about Joel Williams' murder lately and how it seemed to be a symptom of a much larger issue in Chicago back in 2008. It's just so tragic that someone like Joel got caught up in the violence that was all-too-common then. It's almost like his life became a statistic in a city grappling with serious problems.
I read somewhere that the lack of witnesses or cooperation was a major obstacle in cases like Joel's. It makes my heart ache for his family because it feels like justice is so elusive, not just because of the crime itself, but because of the hurdles in solving it. I can't imagine how hard it must be for loved ones not to have closure or answers. Does anyone else think that perhaps community initiatives could have helped at the time, or was the mistrust too deeply entrenched to make a difference?
