I've been doing some reading about the Julie Matte case, and what's really striking to me is how critical the timing becomes for victims who decide to leave abusive situations. Julie had just attended a convention in Texas, and it seemed to have given her the courage to finally make a change. It’s just so painful to think that she was on the brink of escaping and starting anew, only to have her life cut short in such a brutal way. It makes me wonder if there were signs that could have been more visible to others, or maybe systems that could have been in place to provide her with more immediate help when she decided she was ready to leave. For those who knew her, this case is undoubtedly a reminder of the silent battles people may be fighting. Sending all my thoughts to Julie's family and friends during what must be an incredibly challenging time.
