Does anyone else find it chilling how quickly things can change, especially in a community we think we know well? It's hard to wrap my head around what Thomas Smith's loved ones must be going through. His life was taken while doing something as simple as riding his bike—something so many of us do without a second thought. I keep thinking about the moment the ShotSpotter notification went off at 3:29 a.m. and how quickly the officers arrived. It's amazing how technology played a role, yet it's heartbreaking that it even had to. I'm grateful there was surveillance footage and tools in place that led to Maurice Peaker's arrest, but it doesn't change the fact that a life was lost. I hope Mr. Smith's family finds some comfort knowing an effort was made to bring justice in this senseless act. It's a harsh reminder to treasure our loved ones and remain vigilant about our surroundings. It must be so difficult for those who knew him to move forward, knowing he was lost in such a cruel and sudden way. Thinking of his family and friends during this tough time.
