I've been following Michael Vince Garza's case, and one thing that keeps striking me is the heavy burden on his family, especially his mother, Cynthia. I can only imagine how she feels having to navigate through such profound grief, all while anticipating the joy of welcoming a new life into the world. Losing a loved one is already incredibly tough, but when it's accompanied by the bittersweet arrival of a grandchild, it's unimaginable. I can't help but think about how Michael Jr. or Michelle will grow up hearing stories about their dad. I hope they know he was loved deeply and the community grieved his senseless loss. Chicago's gun violence crisis during that time was out of control, and cases like Michael's put a painfully human face on statistics and news reports. Sending strength to his family, and hoping that as a community, we continue working toward safer neighborhoods in honor of those we've lost.
