I've been following the Brayden Lee Barksdale case, and I can't stop thinking about what his family must be going through. The sheer senselessness of his loss is palpable, but what struck me during the trial was the courage of Brayden's aunt, Crystal Powell, when she asked Patrick Chambers why he committed such a horrible act. Her question, borne out of visible pain and anger, is one that will probably never have a satisfying answer. Despite the sadness of the situation, I find it so admirable how the family channeled their grief into seeking justice for Brayden. The court's sentence seems to offer some relief, but I wonder how they can ever truly heal from something like this. My heart goes out to them, especially knowing how loved Brayden was, with his innocent joys like Ninja Turtles and John Deere tractors.
