I came across Cora Mae Ballard Henley's tragic story and can't stop thinking about how much love and promise was lost on that November day in 1929. It's hard to fathom the despair and hopelessness that T.M. Henley must have felt, but more importantly, the loss suffered by the Ballard family and the community is immense. To consider that O.J. Ballard and other relatives were coming to celebrate the holiday season, to share joy and gratitude around a table, only to walk into such a devastating reality is chilling. They intended to bring warmth and fellowship into their family’s home, not the silence and mourning that followed. I can't help but wonder how the family has coped with such a heavy imprint on their history over all these years. How do their descendants speak of Cora Mae, Wanda June, and Flora Bee today? Do they celebrate their lives in some way each November, remembering the cheer these three must have brought into their lives? It serves as a reminder of how crucial it is to cherish every moment with our loved ones and to remain vigilant in supporting those who might be struggling. My heart truly goes out to the Ballard family and anyone impacted by this horrific event.
