I keep thinking about the training and instincts that officers like Master Patrolman Richard O. Riggs have to rely on every day. It must have been terrifying approaching that van knowing it was connected to an armed robbery and still putting himself in danger. It's a reminder of the risks police officers take with every traffic stop and every call they respond to. I can't imagine the courage it takes to step into those situations. The community lost a brave officer that day, and his family lost a loved one doing what he was committed to—protecting others. My heart really goes out to them now and always.
I was reading up on the case of Master Patrolman Richard O. Riggs, and something that really struck me was the impact it must have had on his community and family. Riggs seemed to be a dedicated officer, having served with the Oklahoma City Police Department for seven years. I can only imagine how his wife, stepson, and siblings felt losing someone so close, especially in such a brutal manner.
The community also lost a committed protector that day. Riggs' death probably brought about a lot of fear and uncertainty, considering he was killed while trying to keep his community safe. It makes me think about the risks officers take every day. I hope wherever his family is now, they know people still remember and honor his sacrifice. His bravery is a reminder of the dangers law enforcement faces, and his legacy surely lives on in those who loved him.
