This is a law enforcement families worst nightmare. This was so sad.

I stumbled upon this case while browsing through some old cases, and it really struck me given how Officer Larry W. Walker lost his life. What I find particularly poignant is the emphasis on officer safety during chaotic scenes like the one on that October day in 1986. It serves as a reminder of the split-second decisions they have to make.
From what I have read, Officer Walker's dedication and long service with the Tacoma Police Department show a deep commitment to his community. It's heart-wrenching to think about how his partner must feel, knowing a tragic accident led to the loss of a friend and colleague. The weight of such an event would be incredibly challenging to bear.
Does anyone here know if Officer Walker's family or colleagues spoke out about how this incident changed policies or training in their department? Given how tight-knit law enforcement communities can be, I imagine his colleagues would ensure something positive came from such a tragedy. Would love to hear from those who were in Tacoma around that time or anyone familiar with how the department handled the aftermath.
Has anyone here looked into the protocol changes within the Tacoma PD after Officer Walker’s tragic incident? I’m genuinely curious if they adjusted their approach to similar high-risk calls after such a devastating loss. I can’t imagine the impact this had on Officer Walker’s family, not to mention his partner who must carry the weight of this awful accident. It’s heartbreaking to think of the toll this must take on officers, knowing that tragedies like this are an inherent risk of the job. I hope the PD has made strides to prevent anything like this from happening again.
