I’ve been reflecting on the tragedy of Aric Babbitt and Matthew Deyo’s murder-suicide, especially considering how it unfolded on Lopez Island. It's a jarring reminder of how deeply intertwined light and dark can be in people's lives. I can't help but feel for the victims who are grappling with such a betrayal by someone they trusted, admired, and saw as a mentor. One thing that sticks out to me is how swiftly Babbitt and Deyo left town after the search and investigation intensified. It's alarming when you think about how they managed to borrow a gun under false pretenses. It raises so many questions about accountability and responsibility—that someone lent them a weapon without realizing the potential consequences. For those victims and their families... I can't begin to imagine the layers of pain they're navigating. Not only did they endure abuse, but they’ve also had to process this shocking end. I hope they’re receiving the support they need to heal, and that the community comes together to foster understanding and awareness to prevent something like this from happening again.
