I’ve been reading about Officer Jake Gutierrez’s tragic case, and one aspect that really stands out to me is the decision-making during Johnson's earlier encounter at the Tacoma Mall. It's hard to grasp why the officers didn't arrest Johnson or at least ensure the shotgun was secured. Knowing he had an outstanding warrant, it seems like a missed opportunity, one with devastating consequences.
I can’t imagine what his family is going through, knowing that something might have been done to prevent his death. It must be incredibly frustrating for them, and I think the lawsuit might be their way of trying to find answers and make sense of a senseless loss. Gutierrez deserved to come home to his loved ones, and it’s so important for the community and the department to learn from this.
For those familiar with police protocol, was this an unusual decision, or do things like this happen more often than we think? Sharing our perspectives or any similar experiences might help us understand how changes can be made to protect those who risk everything to keep us safe.
