I've been thinking a lot about the impact that Varren Brown's death had on the Chatham neighborhood. It's truly devastating to see how someone could lose their life so suddenly while just walking on the sidewalk. It brings home the possibility that any of us or our loved ones might be unintentionally caught up in something so senseless. When I read about the changes in police strategies and the disbanding of the gang units, it makes me wonder if a lack of targeted interventions contributed to the rise in gun violence that year. It's clear that systemic problems play a big part, but what more could be done at a community level to help stop this cycle of violence? I feel for Varren's family and all those neighborhoods still grappling with similar issues even today. Their loss reminds us how important it is to find solutions that address both immediate threats and the underlying causes of crime in our communities.
