The tragic loss of Darius T. Farley has been weighing heavily on my mind. Living in Chicago, it's hard to overlook how such violence became almost routine in some areas, yet it should never be normalized. It's especially concerning to see how this pattern of violence tears apart our communities. Darius was just 20, with his whole life ahead of him, and it's heartbreaking to think about what his family must be experiencing. I can't help but wonder about the gang activity that surrounds these incidents. How much influence does it really have over the daily lives of those living in these neighborhoods? And how do we, as a community, begin to unravel these longstanding issues that seem so entrenched? It feels like a daunting task, but conversations about solutions are absolutely necessary if we want to move towards a safer city. The cycle of violence has to end, and finding ways to offer hope and opportunity to our youth might be one way to honor the life of Darius and others lost this year.
