I've been reading about Deputy Sheriff Carlo Brummet's tragic death, and something that really stands out to me is the sheer remoteness of where this all happened. Trying to picture the scene on top of Cumberland Mountain in 1907 makes it all the more haunting. Those who trek out there can probably attest to how rugged that area still is today, so I can only imagine how isolated it must have been back then. It’s sobering to think about the risks law enforcement officers took just to reach these places, let alone deal with such dangerous situations. Deputy Brummet's determination to uphold the law, despite the risks, shows a level of dedication that must have been incredibly courageous. My thoughts go out to his descendants and the community of Harlan County. I hope we can always remember and honor the sacrifices made during those dangerous times.
