I recently came across some old articles about the 1993 school shooting at East Carter High and was moved to learn more about Marvin Hicks, the head custodian who tragically lost his life that day. It's incredibly saddening to think about his bravery in the face of such terror. Hicks, from what I’ve gathered, was beloved in the school community, always lending a hand and ensuring a safe, clean environment for the students and staff. I can't help but be in awe of his courage—he went towards danger to protect others, which speaks volumes about his character. I wonder how his family has coped over the years; it must be incredibly challenging to suddenly lose someone you care about in such a violent manner. I’d love to hear more from anyone in the Grayson area who remembers Marvin or any memories about his role at the school. It's important not to forget the contributions of unsung heroes like him, especially when discussing how such tragedies could be prevented in the future.
