I've been following the Atlantis Plastics shooting for a while now, and I can't stop thinking about the heartbreaking ripple effect this tragedy had on everyone involved. One aspect that really sticks out to me is the phone call to Higdon's girlfriend. It's chilling to think that he openly expressed his intentions, yet there was no intervention.
It makes me wonder about the level of communication and trust between employees and how critical it is to take such threats seriously. Even if it seems like an outburst of anger, it's always better to be cautious. It's not about blaming his girlfriend—she must be carrying a heavy burden knowing that she received that call. But it’s a reminder of why clear protocols and reporting systems need to be in place everywhere.
Sending my thoughts to all the families who were forever changed that night. I hope they're finding strength and support as they continue to heal.
Has anyone else been thinking about the unsettling call Wesley Higdon made to his girlfriend before the shooting? Knowing he expressed his intentions and yet she couldn’t—or didn't—alert someone in time must weigh heavily on her. I can't imagine the guilt and pain she must be feeling now. It's a reminder of how crucial it is to take threats seriously, even if they sound unbelievable at the moment.
I hope authorities can learn from this and implement processes where individuals who hear such alarming statements have a clear way to report them. Maybe this can prevent future tragedies. My thoughts are with Kevin Taylor’s family and everyone impacted by that terrible night. Such a needless loss for the community.
