Does anyone else find it gut-wrenching to think about the bravery Deputy Dewey must have shown that day? It's hard to fathom what it takes to respond to such chaotic and dangerous situations, knowing the risks. Eighteen months is a long time to fight for your life after such a traumatic event. My heart really goes out to his wife and their family. I've been thinking a lot about the responsibility of those involved and how they could have helped. It’s disturbing that Pemberton only got two years for not rendering aid when Deputy Dewey was essentially fighting for survival. It makes me wonder about the weight of bystander responsibility in legal terms. How does the system determine what merits just a couple of years compared to a life sentence for someone else? This case is such a vivid reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day and the long-lasting grief their families endure. I hope his family has found some measure of peace knowing that justice was served, even though nothing can truly make up for their loss.
