I've been thinking a lot about the calls for changing police protocols after Andy Finch's tragic death. While the focus is, of course, on ensuring that such a terrible mistake doesn't happen again, I can't help but also think about how this impacted those officers involved. They were caught in the heat of a stressful and chaotic situation, acting based on the information they had. It doesn't excuse what happened, but it does make me wonder how departments can better train and support officers to make decisions under pressure in a way that's safe for everyone involved. More importantly, though, my heart goes out to Andy's family. Losing a loved one is never easy, but losing them in such an unimaginable way must be even more devastating. I hope that the voices calling for improved protocols lead to real changes, so families like Andy's won't have to experience this kind of loss in the future. Thinking of everyone touched by this case and hoping for healing and meaningful change.
