The loss of Eddie Murphy is deeply felt by everyone who knew him and even by those who didn’t but share in the collective grief for such a young life cut short. I’ve been thinking a lot about how places like Austin, and Chicago in general, have been dealing with this entrenched cycle of violence for so long. It’s devastating to see how the socio-economic struggles in these neighborhoods provide this kind of backdrop for such tragedies. I keep wondering what could be done differently, both by authorities and us as community members. It seems like grassroots movements and local leaders have such a crucial role to play in creating safer environments. How do you all think these communities can be better supported? Is there anything innovative that has been tried or proposed that hasn’t gotten enough attention?
