Hey everyone,
I've been digging into the tragic case of Policeman William P. Stephens and something that's been on my mind is the fate of Thomas Cranmer. Has anyone found any information about what happened to him after he escaped on Constable Herbert's horse? It's so unsettling that there's such a gap in the story.
The records don't seem to give us a clear picture of whether he was ever captured or if he just disappeared into thin air. It's almost as if he's become a ghost in history. Considering the setup—a lawman shot through the floor during a raid, another injured—it's hard not to wonder what cranmer's endgame was. Did he plan his escape, or was it a split-second decision?
I'm just feeling for Stephens' family and colleagues. Not knowing what happened to one of the suspects must have been a heavy burden. It’s a poignant reminder of how challenging law enforcement was back then. If anyone has come across more detailed accounts or knows of any resources, I'd love to hear.
Sending thoughts to everyone impacted by these events all those years ago.
Thanks!
