I’ve been revisiting the heartbreaking events in Colorado Springs from May 2021, and something that keeps weighing on my mind is the role of community support—or lack thereof—in situations like these. It’s just incredibly distressing to think about how a beautiful, joyous occasion like a family birthday party could end in such tragedy. For those who knew Sandra Ibarra-Perez, it seems like there were signs of Teodoro Macias’s controlling behavior, but it's always so difficult to see how serious it is from the outside. I wonder if there were opportunities for friends or family to step in or support Sandra more. These situations are so complicated, and my heart goes out to everyone who may be grappling with feelings of ‘what if’ right now. When incidents like this highlight the issue of domestic violence, it reminds us how important it is to stay connected and vigilant about our loved ones’ well-being. Maybe discussing these signs within our communities can pave the way for better intervention in the future. Sending love and strength to the families as they navigate through this unfathomable loss.
