This case has always struck me deeply given the era it occurred in. I was reflecting on the handling of mental health issues in the early 1900s. The fact that the suspect was eventually moved to Bridgewater State Mental Hospital in 1919 indicates that there was some recognition of mental illness even back then. While today we have a more nuanced understanding of how mental health can impact behavior, it’s thought-provoking to consider how this factor was weighed in legal proceedings over a century ago. It doesn't lessen the tragedy of Sergeant Schlehuber’s death, but it adds a complex layer to the narrative. My heart truly goes out to his family and the officers who have continued to honor his sacrifice through the years. It’s a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those in law enforcement and the evolving nature of justice and mental health perspectives over time.
