I’ve been following the William Smith case and am struck by how his tragic death is often overshadowed by larger discussions about Chicago's crime rates in 2016. We have to remember that behind every statistic is a human story. William was someone's son, friend, and perhaps sibling. It’s just so tragic that his life was cut short by gun violence that year—violence that seemed to spiral out of control. I can’t help but wonder if the dialogue around policing has shifted enough to prevent these kinds of tragedies now. Are there more resources and support available for communities facing violence today than there were back then? William’s death is yet another reminder that there’s still so much work to be done. My thoughts are with his family and others who have faced similar losses. We should consider how these incidents not only affect families but entire communities, who might live in fear or become disengaged from society as a result. It’s a cycle that needs to be disrupted.
