I've recently been reading about the tragic case of Officer Fred Widmann, and while the whole incident feels like it happened in a different era, it's haunting how close it feels. One detail that keeps tugging at my heart is the incredible bravery Widmann showed even after being fatally wounded. He was clearly in so much pain, yet he managed to move himself over a hundred feet to Lafayette Street and called out for help. It's a testament to his character and dedication to the community he served. I'm also struck by the community's reaction—a city coming together, officials and regular folks alike, to give him a proper farewell. It paints a picture of how deeply respected and loved he was. To think of the strength it took for his family, particularly his niece, to later work on preserving his memory with the Waterloo Police Protective Association... Their dedication to honoring him speaks volumes about the lasting impact Fred must have had on those who knew him. It's important that we continue to share his story so his sacrifice isn't lost to time.
