I've been thinking a lot about the Franken family's neighbors and friends, especially in such a small town like Aplington. I can only imagine how overwhelming the sense of loss and confusion must be for them. It breaks my heart to think about how they were probably just living their regular lives, greeting Troy, Valerie, and Dustin on their way to school, chatting with Darrell and Ethel Mae at the local grocery store. Now they've been hit with a tragedy that no one can easily make sense of.
It makes you wonder about the signs that might have been missed. Mental health wasn't talked about as openly back in the early '80s, and I can't help but think if Ethel Mae had received more support, maybe things could have turned out differently. It feels like we have to keep advocating for mental health awareness and resources, so tragedies like this might be prevented.
My heart goes out to everyone who knew the Frankens. Healing from something like this must be incredibly tough, but I hope the community has found some way to support each other through the years.
