I came across Jamie Williams' case while reading about the wave of violence that swept through Chicago in 2016. It's just devastating to think about how someone's life can be cut short in the blink of an eye. Jamie was only 22. That's so young. She had her whole life ahead of her. It's hard to wrap your head around the fact that her story became one of many in a chaotic month that saw over 70 homicides. What really gets to me is imagining the pain and sorrow her family and friends must have felt (and still feel). To lose someone in such a violent, senseless way leaves a long-lasting impact on a community and loved ones. They must have struggled with knowing Jamie was caught up in a terrifying surge of violence largely driven by gang disputes that made neighborhoods feel like war zones. And even more disheartening is how common these stories are in some areas, and how difficult it has been for the city to find lasting solutions to prevent these tragedies. I hope Jamie's story doesn't fade into just another statistic. My thoughts go out to anyone who was close to her and to everyone impacted by similar tragedies. It's important to keep talking about these issues to push for changes that might help prevent further loss of life.
