The killing of Albertano Medrano is one of those devastating reminders of how rampant gun violence was in Chicago back in 2016. One thing that really resonates with me is the incredible strength his family must have had to pull together online memorials and honor his memory, despite the overwhelming grief they must have felt. It's a poignant way to remember Albertano—keeping his spirit alive through shared stories and the love they clearly held for him. I can't even begin to imagine what they went through during that Labor Day weekend, a time when most people are celebrating with family and friends, not mourning the loss of a loved one due to senseless violence. It's just so important for us all to remember those like Albertano and support efforts preventing such tragedies in the future.
