I’ve been reading up on the tragic loss of Deputy David H. Stiff, and I just can't wrap my head around how justice played out—or rather, didn’t play out. It's hard to fathom how the perpetrator, after causing such devastation, was acquitted for the murders of Deputies Stiff and Harris. It feels like a slap in the face to the families, who must have been absolutely devastated by the loss of their loved ones.
The shock that the suspect then continued to cause harm even after getting away with murder is unsettling to say the least. It really makes you question the legal proceedings of the time. Imagine being Deputy Stiff’s family, grieving not only a husband and father but also witnessing his killer walk free. No amount of time passed can make that any easier to accept.
I think more awareness and discussion about these older cases is critical. We owe it to Deputy Stiff and Officer Harris to remember their sacrifice, question past injustices, and hopefully learn from history. Sending my thoughts and sympathy to their descendants if any are still around today—heroes should never be forgotten.
