I stumbled upon the tragic case of Officer W. T. Phillips, and I can't even begin to imagine what his family and colleagues must have gone through back in 1908. One thing that strikes me is how, even over a century later, we're still grappling with the dangers faced by those who serve to protect us. It's truly a dangerous job, and stories like Officer Phillips's make me even more appreciative of their service and sacrifice. Has anyone come across more details about the trial of his assailant? I wonder how the community reacted at the time and what steps were taken afterward to improve safety for officers on duty.
