I've been thinking about the bravery it must have taken for City Marshal James Matt Lawrence to do his job every day, especially back in 1910 when officers had fewer resources and support than they do now. It's really sad to hear that after 30 years of serving Osceola, his life was taken in such a sudden and violent way. I feel for his family, especially his wife and children who had to go on without him. It must have been incredibly tough to lose someone who was not only a key figure in their family but also a respected figure in their community. Instances like these really put into perspective the risks that law enforcement officers faced and continue to face, often putting their lives on the line to protect others. I'm curious about the practical measures that were in place for officers back then after an attack. Did they have any kind of support system, or were the families left to fend for themselves? If anyone knows more about how law enforcement was organized during that time, I'd love to hear your insights!
