I stumbled upon Rashad X. Baker’s case and felt a pull to dig deeper. Thinking about his family having to navigate life without him is tough beyond words. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain his loved ones must feel knowing he was taken so senselessly. From what I’ve read, Rashad was caught on a particularly violent day, in what was already a difficult year for Chicago. It’s frustrating to see how, despite numerous programs and policing strategies, violence still grips certain neighborhoods so tightly. How can we keep saying there’s progress when stories like Rashad’s continue to make headlines? It’s concerning that for all the effort put into policing, there seems to be a real gap in building trust with the community. I’m curious if anyone else has seen effective models of violence prevention elsewhere that could be applied here? Grieving families like Rashad’s deserve answers and, more importantly, tangible change.
