I've been following the Chester Hornowski case since I heard about it, and what really gets to me is the sheer number of shots fired—22 rounds. It’s hard to wrap my head around the level of escalation that must have happened for Robert Penny to go and reload after the initial shots. This wasn't a spontaneous reaction; he actually took the time to reload.
Chester was 71 years old—he'd lived such a full life, serving as a police officer for over 30 years. I can't imagine how terrifying those moments must have been for him. It's so senseless that someone who had already given so much to society was caught in such a violent situation in his retirement years. My heart goes out to his family and anyone who knew him. It must be haunting to think that his years on the Chicago streets weren't what took his life, but instead, a rent dispute in the place he chose to settle down.
Has anyone else felt that there's something larger at play here with the way this confrontation escalated? Maybe mental health issues on Penny’s part? I'm interested in hearing thoughts.
