Reading about Erik Peoples' death really shook me. I can't help but think about his family and what they must be going through. It's a tragedy not just for them, but honestly for every resident in North Lawndale. The violence there feels so relentless. With 2016 being such a brutal year in Chicago, Erik's story just feels like one among too many. On top of mourning their loved one, families are forced to grapple with the larger fear of living in these conditions. North Lawndale, like many other neighborhoods, deserves more attention, more resources, more hope. It's not just about addressing the symptom—the gun violence—but also the root causes like poverty and lack of opportunities. I hope communities can come together and push for real, substantial change because this can’t be the norm. Thoughts and prayers are with the Peoples family and everyone else affected by this.
