I came across an interesting detail about the location Gallagher was kept in after his arrest – a closed saloon. It's striking to think about how makeshift the facilities could be back then, especially given that the local jail had burned down. It seems like such an informal setting to hold someone as dangerous as Gallagher, and unfortunately, it turned into a fatal error for Constable Hawkins. The town's limited resources at that time must have posed a huge challenge for law enforcement. I really feel for Hawkins and the impossible situation he was thrust into. It's incredibly sad that his life was cut short due to such unfortunate circumstances. Thinking about the kind of risks officers had to take with little to no backup is pretty sobering. Hawkins' bravery should never be underestimated. Sending thoughts to his family, who had to endure such a terrible loss.
Just came across the story of Constable James Gabriel Hawkins, and it's so troubling to think about the challenges law enforcement faced in those days, especially in such a booming town like Jerome. I can't help but feel for Hawkins and his untimely end while on duty. It must have been incredibly unsettling for the close-knit community, especially knowing that Gallagher was someone who already had a reputation for violence. I wonder how the locals coped with having someone like Gallagher back out in society after he was pardoned. It’s infuriating how he managed to rebuild his life while Hawkins's family, friends, and colleagues had to continue on without him. Does anyone know more about the laws back then regarding the pardoning process? It's puzzling and, frankly, upsetting how someone could get released after such a crime, but I'd love to understand the system better.
