Just came across the case of Deputy Sheriff Robert Lee Wright, and I can't stop thinking about the role of Thomas Metcalf, the pilot who volunteered for the posse. It's fascinating to see how aviation was integrated into law enforcement efforts as early as 1930. Metcalf used a monoplane to aid in tracking down Irene "Iron" Schroeder and the others, which must have been a huge advancement at the time. It’s a testament to the community's commitment to justice that someone would brave the skies under those conditions to help catch such dangerous fugitives. While the focus often remains on the officers directly involved, we shouldn't overlook the community efforts and the risks allies like Metcalf took on. I can only imagine the kind of toll the entire event took, both on the land and in the air. It’s incredible that nearly a century later, Deputy Wright's legacy continues to be honored, reminding us of the countless individuals who contribute their unique skills to bring criminals to justice. Does anyone know if Metcalf's involvement was ever officially recognized or if his story faded into the background?
