I've been reading a lot about Steven Freeman's tragic death, and it's just so distressing to think about his family's ordeal, especially during the holidays. Each story about the loss of life during that Christmas weekend is painful, but what caught my attention was the impact of reduced policing tactics in Chicago leading up to 2016. It's so complex because these tactics are incredibly controversial; some argue they help, while others say they can lead to more tension and distrust in the community. Steven's loss, amidst such a violent year for the city, makes me wonder how police and communities can better collaborate to find a balance that decreases violence without further marginalizing already-struggling neighborhoods. With 760 homicides in 2016, it seems like there's a critical need for effective strategies that are inclusive and can actually address the root causes of the violence. As we remember Steven and the others whose lives were ended too soon, my thoughts are with their families as they navigate their grief amid such difficult circumstances.
