This case has always haunted me, especially thinking about the young novice monk, Matthew Miller. It's so hard to imagine a teenager being drawn into such a peaceful community only to meet such a violent end. I read somewhere that Matthew was really eager to learn about Buddhism and the temple lifestyle, having arrived just a few days before the tragic event. It breaks my heart to think about what could have been for him. As a parent, it’s devastating to imagine losing a child to such senseless violence. To Matthew’s family, and all the families affected, my thoughts are with you. It's incredible to see the community rebuilding and continuing their mission despite everything they've been through. Let’s hope that this case continues to educate and remind people about the importance of peace and tolerance in our world.
Has anyone else been thinking about the impact this has had on families? I was reading about the Wat Promkunaram mass shooting and I keep coming back to young Matthew Miller's story. A novice monk, just 8 years old, a life barely started. It’s so hard to fathom how something so horrific could happen to someone so innocent and full of potential. His family must have faced unimaginable grief, losing a child who was dedicated to a life of spirituality and peace. It makes me wonder about the support systems in place for families who endure such profound losses. How do they cope, rebuild, and find any sense of peace after something so devastating? Sending strength and love to all those who knew and loved Matthew and the other victims. ?
