I've been following the Imperial case, and one aspect that stands out to me is the role that the juvenile justice system may have played in this tragedy. It’s utterly devastating to think about how Hector and Sandra’s deaths might have been prevented if the system had taken Aguilar’s previous offenses more seriously. The fact that he was released so early after assaulting a police officer is unsettling. What kinds of checks and balances were in place, if any? Shouldn't there have been a more thorough evaluation, especially given his history of violence? The loss is unimaginable for the family and friends of Hector and Sandra, and my heart goes out to them. I hope that in the wake of such a tragedy, there might be hope for meaningful change in how offenders, especially juveniles with a record of violence, are evaluated and dealt with. Does anyone know if there have been reforms since this case came to light? I think we owe it to the memory of the Imperials to push for a system that genuinely protects society.
