I’ve been following the case of Bruce Owens, and I can’t stop thinking about his family and friends, especially his classmates at Dunbar Career Academy. Losing a fellow student in such a sudden and violent way must be so incredibly hard for them. It makes me wonder how schools in Chicago, especially in areas like Englewood, are equipped to support kids dealing with this kind of trauma. Are there enough counselors? Do they have programs to help students cope with the fear and grief of losing someone to violence? Just thinking about how his friends must feel sitting in class, with that empty chair, really hits home. I really hope the community steps up to provide the support these kids need, not just in the short term but long-term, as they try to navigate living in an environment filled with this kind of danger. If anyone has insights or knows more about the school's response, I'd be interested to hear how they're helping the students through this tragedy.
