I truly can't stop thinking about Kanari Gentry-Bowers and the circumstances of her senseless death. As a parent, my heart aches for her family and the unimaginable pain they're going through. It’s just so devastating that a child couldn’t even enjoy playing at a school playground without becoming a victim of gun violence. What strikes me though is the sheer randomness of it all - that innocent children are caught in the crossfire of a much bigger issue affecting Chicago. It's infuriating and deeply concerning to see the continuous cycle of violence and what it means for the community. Why is this happening to such a lovely neighborhood space meant for kids? The relationship between community spaces and safety has never been more pivotal, and yet here we are. I hope this brings more attention and more action towards making places like the Washington Park playground safe again. Kanari deserved so much better, as do all the children in Chicago. I can’t help but think about what more can be done to make a significant change and help protect the kids in these areas. Anyone else feel the same?

It's hard to put into words the sadness and anger I feel about Kanari's story. As someone who grew up in a neighborhood not too far from Washington Park, this hits close to home. It's painful to think of a child, full of life and potential, becoming another victim of the senseless gun violence that plagues our city. What's particularly disturbing is that this wasn't an isolated incident. Kanari's death is part of a much bigger, deeply rooted issue in Chicago. It’s beyond frustrating to see innocent lives like hers caught in the crossfire, and it makes me wonder—how many more young lives are we going to lose before something truly changes? My heart goes out to her family and friends, who are suffering an unimaginable loss. I hope that Kanari's story serves as a wake-up call that spurs more powerful action against this violence, because our children shouldn’t have to grow up in a world where playing outside is a life-or-death risk.
