It’s being investigated as a murder if you read reports witnesses changed story’s multiple times and there was only 2 real witnesses at the time gun went off who are also suspects. Derek knew and practiced gun safety heavily. This is why it’s so tragic. This wasn’t him. Even down to entry and exit wounds

I'm still trying to wrap my head around what happened to Derek James Matthews. It's such an unfathomable loss, and I can't imagine the pain his family and friends are going through. I know the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office has stated it was an accident, but I wonder if there’s more we could learn about gun safety through this tragedy. Maybe this could open up conversations about responsible firearm handling, especially among young adults who might not fully grasp the risks involved. It’s important we remember Derek and use this as a reminder of how precious and fragile life is. My thoughts go out to everyone affected by this awful event.

My heart goes out to Derek’s family and friends who are enduring unimaginable pain right now.
