I was scrolling through the Chicago Sun-Times list of homicides and was struck by how many names filled 2017. It’s utterly overwhelming. One that caught my attention was Melvin D. McCray. From what I gather, he was another victim of the senseless violence in Chicago that year. I never knew Melvin, but I’ve been reading about him on a few memorial pages, and it sounds like he was a truly remarkable person—a dedicated father and someone who brought so much joy to those around him. What’s been on my mind is how these short news reports and numbers often fail to show the full picture of who these individuals were. Melvin wasn’t just a statistic; he was someone loved, someone important to many. It’s so difficult to read about these losses impacting real people and families, especially when those who knew him describe him as having a "heart of gold." It just seems so unfair that we’re still talking about so many tragedies like this in Chicago, even with efforts from the police to curb the violence. I can’t imagine the pain his family and friends must feel. I hope we can eventually see a Chicago where stories like Melvin’s become a part of the past.
