I’ve been following the Monterey Park tragedy and wanted to share something about Hongying Jian, or Nancy Liu as many knew her. From everything I’ve read and heard, she seemed to have a light that touched everyone around her. A while back, I stumbled on an article where her friends reminisced about her love for music and dance, which really brought her joy.
It’s incredibly moving how the community has come together after this senseless act, but the loss of someone as lively and involved as Hongying is truly felt. I remember reading that she hadn’t been able to visit her family back in China due to the pandemic, and it's just so overwhelming to think about the missed moments and memories.
Sending lots of strength to Jeff Liu and everyone affected. It’s in sharing these stories that we keep the memory of Hongying and the other victims alive. Stay safe, everyone.
Is anyone else struck by the fact that Hongying Jian, or Nancy as she was known, was such a vibrant and active woman? It's so painful to think that someone who brought so much joy to her community through her love for dancing and music could be taken away so suddenly and tragically. I was reading about how she was an avid volleyball player and even shared her talent on the piano with friends and family. It’s truly unsettling how quickly everything can change. My heart goes out to Jeff and the rest of Nancy’s family, who must be grappling not only with her loss but also with the manner in which it happened. As more details about this senseless act come to light, I keep thinking about how we, as a community, could better protect and remember those who have shown us the beauty of life, like Nancy did.
