Has anyone else been following the details around Nikia L. Betts' case and the ongoing issues in the Austin neighborhood? It’s been so hard seeing how her death affects not just her immediate family, but the whole community. I keep thinking about how Nikia, lovingly known as Kiki, seemed to be such a light in her family’s life. Her untimely death has put a spotlight once again on the persistent violence in Chicago, particularly in areas like Austin. I recently read about the ambush that took her life, and it's just horrifying thinking about how her 4-year-old son was also caught in it. The little guy's bravery amidst such terror is unimaginable. It's so important that we strive for a safer environment for all our kids, so they aren't forced to grow up with this kind of fear as their backdrop. It’s heartwarming, though, to see how her legacy lives on in the comments and candles left in her honor. It seems that "momma's little mini" is remembered with so much love, and that’s something no one can take away. As upsetting as these incidents are, it’s essential that we keep discussing them and pushing for justice and real change. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community.
